Lincoln Area Festival

Lincoln Cathedral was once again the magnificent setting for our annual Area Festival. Gordon Appleton, the RSCM’s Director of Voluntary Networks, demonstrated both his musical and logistical skills as he expertly pulled together a choir of some 300 singers, which included the boys and men of the Cathedral Choir. Charles Harrison, the cathedral's Assistant Director of Music provided a rousing accompaniment as well as some inspiring improvisations between the verses of the processional hymn. The service was entitled A Celebration of the Holy Angels and used text and liturgy devised by the late Canon Owen Conway, former Precentor of Chester Cathedral. The music included:

Let all the angels of God worship him – Handel (Messiah)

Grow in Grace - Malcolm Archer

Love is the Touch -  Iona Song

If ye love me - Philip Wilby

And I saw another angel – Stanford

During the service, Award Winners were presented with their medals and certificates by the Dean of Lincoln and the Bishop of Lincoln.

Midsummer Music

Members of choirs from all over North Lincolnshire gathered for the RSCM annual Midsummer Music event. The only thing missing this year was summer! This event has become a favourite with local choirs and this year attracted 50 singers. Held in Caistor Parish Church, and directed by Steven Maxson, the evening began with a short rehearsal, which was peppered with
the by now obligatory jokes from Steven.

Music included Elgar's Ecce Sacerdos Magnus (Behold a great priest who in his days pleased the Lord, and was found righteous) very fitting, as this year is the 150th year of Elgar's birth and we only missed his birthdate by eleven days.
After a break, with time for a picnic and catching up with old friends, there was a short service on the theme of Praise, led by the Bishop of Lincoln, John Saxbee. Sadly the weather was wet and dreary but the atmosphere inside the church was warm, and the Bishop's address was most uplifting.

Awards Training Day

Thirty five singers of various ages descended on St. John’s Church, Hawthorn Bank, Spalding for a day of  training for the Lincoln Area Dean’s and Bishop’s Awards. To begin the day everyone packed themselves into the choir stalls for a joint training session led by Michael Sands (Organist and Choirmaster at St. Wulfram's, Grantham). A hymn and a psalm were rehearsed as well as Dyson's Magnificat in C minor,  Elgar's 'Ave verum’ and Wood's 'O Thou the central orb'

The singers were then divided into groups, each under the leadership of a member of the South Lincolnshire District Committee, for a look at the various components of the awards. These included the specific requirements for hymn and psalm singing, sight singing, aural tests and aspects of repertoire. Junior singers took part in a quiz which covered parts of Section D of the syllabus – The Choir in Context.

Everyone tucked into their packed lunches before another joint singing session and further group activities. The event ended with a short service incorporating the music that had been learned during the day.
