A Singing Day with John Rutter

Thank you so much for such a wonderful day, it was brilliant - good music, good company, good venue, good organisation and good leadership too. A day to remember.

Our thanks to you all, & especially to John Rutter, who was so patient & positive, & also made the occasion such fun with all his anecdotes!!

Just wanted to thank you all for a wonderful day last Saturday. We all enjoyed it and came away feeling refreshed and a little wiser

We all enjoyed it immensley, the arrangements, venue, refreshments, communication were carefully organised and of course John Rutter was outstanding. Thank you so much, it has been a fantastic experience.

The actual singing bit was jolly hard work: I was exhausted by the time I got home in the early evening on Saturday! And to be honest, I was sometimes so entertained by his anecdotes that I found myself wishing he'd been booked simply as a raconteur, omitting the singing bit entirely.

Midsummer Music

The Midsummer event at Caistor was really special. Over 40 singers from eight different choirs joined for a service under the title 'Rejoice'. Steven Maxson again wove his magic spell and we provided a mixture of introit, intercessions, anthems, hymns, and readings for our service which left many of us delighted at the quality of the result after only some ninety minutes rehearsal.
The peaceful atmosphere within Caistor church provided a lovely background, and an appropriate sermon from Canon Ian Robinson gave the final polish to our evening.
The joy of the website is that the delightful music for the evening was available to all of us to take hard copies for use in our own services, at a time of our own choice.

Small Choirs Together

Members of churches in the South District gathered in All Saints Church, Holbeach for an afternoon of music making led by Eric Wayman, Director of Music at St. Botolph's Church, Boston. Using music from the 2009 Area Festival Book and chanted versions of the canticles, they rehearsed for a service of Evensong, at which they were joined by members of the church's congregation.

Music for Lady Day

Peter Hill writes about the event at Holy Trinity Church, Messingham:

"All went extremely well as Fred Goodwin led us purposefully into a well chosen and well organised musical mixture to reflect the 'Annunciation'. The experience was thoroughly worthwhile. There was some very fine singing at the service which ended the evening. Thanks due to Alan Phillips' work behind the scenes and also at the organ on the evening. Well over thirty choristers from eight parishes took part."

4th October 2008

Lincoln Area Festival

The 2008 Area Festival was held at St James, Louth. It was directed by Andrew Carwood, Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral. Andrew is an early music specialist, well known for his work with The Cardinall's Musick, and for his knowledge of 16th and 17th century choral music. We were particularly honoured to have him conduct the choir for the introit Let thy merciful ears by Thomas Mudd.

Other music included the rarely heard anthem, Let all the world in every corner sing by William Mathias which includes the eponymous well-known hymn, and the much loved Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in D by Arthur Herbert Brewer. The Preces and Responses were those written by Bernard Rose for Magdalen College, Oxford.

We were introduced to the new Diocesan Music Development Officer, Rosemary Field, who has begun a number of projects to increase church music making within the area, as well as a mentoring scheme to encourage young directors and instrumentalists. During the service, the RSCM Dean's and Bishop's awards were presented to all the choristers who had been successful in the year’s examinations.

The King of Instruments

Thirty organ enthusiasts spent a morning at The Burtey Fen Collection, Pinchbeck, which houses a four-manual concert pipe organ, together with Wurlitzer and Compton cinema pipe organs.

They were able to explore the inside workings and Nicholas Pitts, the co-owner of the collection, explained some of the technical details about the installations. Both he and Eric Wayman  gave demonstrations and several took up the opportunity to have a play themselves.

Visit the website of The Burtey Fen Collection to find out more about this unique musical centre.
