Midsummer Music

Peter Hill reports:

Our Midsummer Music event was once again held at Caistor Parish Church, this year involving not only about sixty choristers, but also a brief address by Rosemary Field, Lincoln Diocesan Music Development Officer. One major improvement has been that the congregation for the service has grown significantly (an eightfold improvement for this year). The theme was 'Prayer', with the anthem being Mendelssohn's 'Hear My Prayer'. The very accomplished soloist was Lizzie Adams. The chorus consisted of ten church choirs plus a few singers from other choirs. Steven Maxsom was, as usual, our guide and mentor for the event, which, as Canon Ian Robinson said, has become the highlight of our summer. More choirs made use (eventually!) of our website to obtain information and the music.

Awards Training Day

The annual Training Day for the Dean's and Bishop's Awards was held this year at All Saints Church, Holbeach. Although numbers were down on last year a dozen prospective candidates were put through their paces by our Area Chairman and Director of Music at Boston Stump, Eric Wayman. The main focus was on the practical aspects of the awards, especially the aurals and the sight singing.

Lincoln Area Festival

Lincoln Cathedral was once again the magnificent setting for our annual Area Festival. Gordon Appleton, the RSCM’s Director of Voluntary Networks, demonstrated both his musical and logistical skills as he expertly pulled together a choir of some 300 singers, which included the boys and men of the Cathedral Choir. Charles Harrison, the cathedral's Assistant Director of Music provided a rousing accompaniment as well as some inspiring improvisations between the verses of the processional hymn. The service was entitled A Celebration of the Holy Angels and used text and liturgy devised by the late Canon Owen Conway, former Precentor of Chester Cathedral. The music included:

Let all the angels of God worship him – Handel (Messiah)

Grow in Grace - Malcolm Archer

Love is the Touch -  Iona Song

If ye love me - Philip Wilby

And I saw another angel – Stanford

During the service, Award Winners were presented with their medals and certificates by the Dean of Lincoln and the Bishop of Lincoln.
